IMD issues orange alert for storm and heavy rain in several districts of Bengal from Monday

Residents across West Bengal may finally get relief from the intense heat as thunderstorms and rain are forecast to continue for the next four days. According to the weather department, the change in weather has already begun in several parts of South Bengal due to the influence of a western disturbance, bringing scattered showers and strong winds since early Sunday morning.

In many districts, including Kolkata, the sky turned cloudy from the morning, with gusty winds and light rainfall bringing temporary relief after several days of scorching temperatures. In areas like Arambagh, dark clouds covered the sky and rain accompanied by cold winds significantly cooled the atmosphere. Similar weather conditions were reported in Jhargram, where light rain early in the morning was followed by heavier showers later in the day. The meteorological department has forecast that the intensity of storms and rainfall may increase from Monday and continue till Thursday. A yellow alert has been issued for Kolkata for the next four days due to the possibility of thunderstorms and rain. Meanwhile, an orange alert has been issued for several districts of South Bengal on Tuesday and Wednesday as stronger storms and heavy rainfall are expected.

In North Bengal, heavy rainfall has been predicted in districts such as Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar on Wednesday. While the showers are expected to bring down the maximum temperature by around 3–4 degrees Celsius, authorities have warned of possible lightning strikes and hailstorms that may damage crops, particularly mango and litchi cultivation. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms.
